Book, as a repository of information and knowledge, has undergone many changes ever since the dawn of civilization. Multiplication of copies of a book on a large scale was made feasible only after the invention of printing press in the 15th century.

Profusely illustrated, Books for National Development is a pioneering attempt to trace the development in writing material, printing and binding technology, and book development. It highlights the lessons to be learnt from

the study of books, books as means of creativity, the need for inculcating reading habit, for bringing in spiritual elevation and positive values and books as instrument of education. It describes the ingredients of a book, the need for and approach in e-publishing, essentials of editing, role of UNESCO in book development, setting up of libraries for book development, future of the book, and the requirement of books in the twenty-first century keeping in view the

developments in emerging technology where both authors and publishers shall have to reorient their approach. In view of its rich contents, the book should be of great reference value for students, teachers, professionals connected with book publishing, book distribution, book development and educationists concerned with the formulation of educational policy.
